CARA RIVER

This photograph above shows the length of the LONG POOL.

At the start of the long pool there is a large boulder showing in the water on the far bank, this is an excellent area to start your fishing as many salmon hold along and behind the boulder.Fishing through the pool and moving down towards the tail of the pool one should give extra time fishing this area as again salmon hold just above the tail of the pool.

After the foot and mouth scare I fished the Cara and took six lovely sea trout ranging from 1lbs up to 2lbs in weight on a small Currys shrimp size fourteen treble and a small Thunder and Lightning size fourteen. These Trout were very fresh and obviously had come up on the last tide and as one can see were taken during daytime hours in bright sunshine.

My tackle remains the same throughout the year from start of season untill the end of the season except in late season I will change down from 8lbs breaking strain to 6lbs breaking strain both for salmon and sea trout. For this river I suggest one sticks with just four flies which I find to be most succesful.I use a two fly cast system Top dropper,Wickhams Fancy,Point fly,Currys shrimp.Second team would be Top dropper,Thunder and Lightning,Point fly,Ahillies shrimp(hot orange)all the above flies are size fourtheen trebles and singles.
